Dive into Love: How to Plan a Unique Pre-Wedding Shoot

Meeting our future brides and grooms for a pre-wedding session is one of our favourite Sunday activities, especially if the weather is on our side.

The excitement of meeting new people, the relaxed atmosphere, the laughs and stories we share, and the fact that there’s no time pressure just make us feel at ease and get our creative juices flowing.

And what could make a perfect Sunday even better?

When your couple asks if you’re okay with them going into a lake during their photoshoot. Are you kidding me?! We’re absolutely thrilled!

Such was the case with Amy and Josh. We always advise couples to put together a mood board, and boy, did they deliver! When Amy sent us all these photos of people running by a lake and then jumping in the water, we knew we were in for a great day!

Before we dive into the tips, we just have to say that we love a bit of adventure with any excuse. So if you want to get married on top of Snowdon, elope in the Maldives, or have a couple’s photoshoot on the karting tracks, we're up for it all. Drop us an email with your crazy, unique idea, and we’ll figure out a way to make it happen. And now…

Here are 3 tips that Amy and Josh used to plan a unique pre-wedding session:

  1. Think about what you enjoy doing as a couple. Amy and Josh love wild swimming and they do it very often throughout the year, even in the cooler months. Don’t be fooled by the sunshine in these images; it was a cold spring day in April when we took them.

  2. Choose a familiar environment. For this session, they only had to go as far as a 5-minute drive from their home. We’re happy to travel further if it makes the session better. Honestly, we couldn't have shot in this location if it weren’t for them. This lake, surrounded by wild bushes, is hidden from view when you’re just driving down the street. Although it was a bit challenging to get there, it was totally worth it as Amy and Josh knew the area so well, they felt comfortable being photographed there.

  3. Choose your outfits carefully. We couldn’t have hoped for better outfits for this session. The colours complemented both of them, and the blue matched beautifully with the water and the skies. It was a chilled Sunday afternoon, and these outfits perfectly reflected the vibe of the day. We also loved the boots choice, which was so fitting for the location, especially because we had to go through some muddy patches to get to the water. A&J weren’t necessarily planning on going in with their clothes on, but we thought it would fit perfectly in the story and we’re glad they listened to us.

And just like that, by making some small but impactful decisions, Amy & Josh managed to have a unique pre-wedding session that tells their story in an authentic manner. We were there just to witness it as it unfolded and capture the memories for eternity.
